While some masks may fit perfectly fine during your average day-to-day activities, several designs are not up to more robust activities like running or cycling.

During those cool autumn mornings, designs that are not adjustable, or that hang around the ear, can be quite irritating when running or cycling. These masks tend to be either too tight, squeezing your ears to the point you look like an elf, or they are too loose and fall off your face during runs.

Other bugbears can be them directing air upward and fogging up glasses, and lacking the durability to survive a few washing cycles.

Sportspeople should be on the lookout for materials that have good moisture-wicking fabric. This means the material is quick to soak up moisture and dries rapidly so that your sweat, and in this case spit and condensate moisture from exhaled air, doesn’t oversaturate the fabric, which in turn makes it challenging to breathe through.

Government regulations insist that:

An easily-identifiable inside and outside.

"Clear markings or design options must be used to distinguish between the outside of the mask and the inside of the mask," the guidelines say.

A smooth, preferably synthetic-fiber layer on the insider.

The inner layer of the mask is critical, the government guide says. It must be pleasant against the skin, not least of all because irritation could cause wearers to fiddle with them, which doesn't help.

The inner layer must be soft, must neither repel nor accumulate moisture, and shouldn't shed lint – with loose particles that can be inhaled – when washed.

Synthetic fibres that dry quickly are best, the guide says, and "care should be taken" if you go with cotton or polly-cotton instead.

Ties that don't need you to touch the mask itself.

Tie-straps that hold the mask in place should make for comfortable wear – and "should not be designed to require that the wearer touches the front of the mask at all."

User manual.

"A user-guide MUST be supplied with a mask on how to wear and how to care for it," it says.

How to properly use a cloth mask:
The usage of any type of mask should be accompanied by strictly adhering to safe use guidelines. Wash your hands before applying and after removing a mask, never touch the cloth part, never fiddle with it whilst wearing, refrain from touching your face. Discard disposable masks. Washcloth masks with warm soapy water and iron when dry.

It is very important that you use a cloth mask properly. If you do not, it might result in you putting themselves at risk. The simple guidelines to use are:

Only use a mask that has been cleaned & ironed
Place the mask with the correct side facing your nose and mouth and covering both well
Tie the strings behind your head, or if you are using elastic bands, make sure these are tight
Make sure it fits well. Move it around to get the best fit. Never touch the cloth part.
Once you have put on the mask, DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE again until you take it off
When you take it off, undo the ties, and carefully fold the mask inside out, hold it by the strings/elastic and place the mask in a container preserved for washing the cloth mask.
Wash hands thoroughly and dry before doing anything else

Maintaining the mask:
You must have at least two cloth masks per person so you will be able to wash one and have a clean one ready for use.

Wash the mask daily in soap and hot water (tolerated during hand wash).
Rinse thoroughly and dry
IRON THE MASK - this is the best means of disinfection!

Please Note
For health and safety reasons if the packaging has been opened and or masks have been used they can not be returned or exchanged.
